The Raid was an interesting outing. As is often the case, all sorts of less important, but apparently urgent things get in the way of living as one would like. So it was for a few who had hoped to take part in the event. Of those who were able to escape to our waterway paradise some had to let the wisdom of their years hold back enthusiasm that there bodies could no longer support. So our raid was more a cruise in company with camping.

I got the opportunity to sail Chris Rands fibre glass hulled 'Ethel ' with its re-cut old dinghy sails and tiny transom. The mizzen was off set so a normal (?) rudder could be fitted and removed to use a 2 hp outboard. The rig was jib, gaff main and 4 sided mizzen, produced by having a long through batten in place of a sprit gaff. (If that makes sense to any one but me). I rowed out against a nice little onshore breeze with the mizzen up. Once clear of some reeds and weed I unfurled the jib and sailed off. Once far enough off shore to feel I would be able to sort out the main before being blown back to shore, I raise the gaff main, lowered it and sorted out halyard tangles, raised it again and set of. It sailed off as sweet as one could hope for. It endorsed my decision (already committed to) to build a canoe yawl. I sailed to Hindmarsh Island to check on a group of raiders who had decided to stay on the island then returned to base camp. The wind was over the port quarter and she skimmed off as soon as sail was set. I was then hit buy a bit of a puff and to my amazement she got up on the plane and stayed that way for the 4 to 5 minute duration of the puff. Wonderful sailing, but it gave pause when I considered the considerably larger rig on the 'Lillie' design and my decision to sneak it a little larger on my 'Echo'.

We sailed in company up Holmes Creek. (so appropriately named) Two cat boats, one GP 14 and a sailing canoe with a lateen rig. Lunched and returned with a sea breeze behind us, all boats able to keep station with the jib down on the GP.

Nights of communal campfire, camp oven cooked lamb, hearty breakfasts and kind weather left participants happy they had come.

The consensus was that we  should do it again in 2011 and I am now looking to stage it or something similar in November, may be a 'Regatta Week' working from a single base camp with excursions out and back and a few round the buoy events.

We offer free camping sites for those who turn up with a canoe yawl, a sailing canoe, or a cat boat.
